Can a Chiropodist make Custom Orthotics?

Orthotics are custom made removable devices that are inserted into footwear and serve to correct the position of the feet.

The feet function in a mechanical way (joint motion and angles) and by placing the joints, muscles and tendon/ligaments in a more efficient position, orthotics are able to improve the movement of the feet and lower legs, thereby treating painful symptoms.

A complete weight bearing and non-weight bearing biomechanical exam, by a chiropodist; with the gain analysis is the first step necessary for an effective custom orthotic prescription.

Based on this information, a 3-dimensional impression or cast of the foot is completed and used during the custom manufacturing process.

Chiropodists and Podiatrists are the only regulated health professionals in Ontario with a legislated scope of practice for orthotic provision. This ensures that anyone who receives orthotic management by a Chiropodist or Podiatrist can be assured that they are receiving thorough, competent and safe care.

Both podiatrists and chiropractors are healthcare professionals who treat various structural ailments that occur within the body. More specifically, podiatrists treat conditions related to the feet, ankles, and legs, whereas chiropractors examine and treat many parts of the body, with a special focus on the spine. After diagnosing a condition, chiropractors provide treatment through adjustments of the joints and spinal column, as well as through massage therapy or acupuncture.
